The couple married on April 1, 1984, embracing a practical gesture by reusing Joel’s former wedding band. They translated their chemistry to the screen across projects including Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, Fargo, Burn After Reading and Hail, Caesar!, and reunited for The Tragedy of Macbeth in 2021, a film Joel directed solo after years collaborating with his brother.

In 1995 they adopted son Pedro from Paraguay as an infant.
