Quiet swaps and cool-downs

The King’s Life Guard at Horse Guards will still change at 08:00 on Wednesday and Friday, but without ceremony to avoid heat stress to the horses. On duty soldiers will be moved into shaded areas and rotated more frequently — measures the Division said are normal during hot weather.

Tradition, interrupted

The Changing of the Guard, a 45-minute ceremony typically starting at 10:45 with the New Guard arriving from Wellington Barracks accompanied by a band, has only been suspended on rare occasions before — after the 2017 Manchester bombing and for 18 months in 2020–21 during the COVID-19 pandemic. The royals did appear recently at Trooping the Colour on June 13, 2026; Buckingham Palace remains the official London residence, though the King has used Clarence House as his home amid ongoing palace work.
