Royal roots and a medical tradition

Mirko is the eldest son of Prince Kubrat and the grandson of King Simeon, Bulgaria’s last Tsar. Prince Kubrat was also a surgeon who worked in Madrid. The family’s close ties to Spain reflect generations of marriages and careers tied to the country.

From exile to public life

King Simeon reigned from 1943 to 1946, spent decades in exile, returned after 1996 and later served as Bulgaria’s prime minister from 2001 to 2005. His children pursued advanced degrees and professional lives: Prince Kardam earned a master’s at Penn State and died in 2015; Princes Kyril and Konstantin-Assen studied at Princeton and Columbia and entered finance; Princess Kalina became an artist and activist.
